May 10 2004: Michael
nominated for Tony Award!
Bravos and BIG
Congratulations to Michael for being nominated for Best
Featured Actor in a Musical.
Just last
week Michael was named as Best Featured Actor in a Musical
by the Outer Critics Association for his portrayal of John Wilkes
Booth in Assassins.
From "dynamic", "swashbuckling" and "matinee
idol" to "coldly compelling" "violence seems
to drip from his teeth when he speaks"..."the pinnacle
of the pantheon in this Satanic vaudeville". Since it's opening
last month, critics have singled out Michael's hauntingly complex
performance.
Other nominees in the Featured actor category include: John Cariani,
Fiddler on the Roof; Raúl Esparza, Taboo;
Michael McElroy, Big River and Michael's fellow assassin
Denis O'Hare (Charles Guiteau).
Assassins was nominated for a total of 7 awards
including: Best Revival of a Musical, Joe Mantello for Best Directing
in a Musical, Jules Fisher & Peggy Eisenhauer for Outstanding
Lighting Design, Robert Brill for Best Scenic Design and Michael
Starobin for Best Orchestrations.
The Tony Awards will be presented live from Radio City Music Hall
on Sunday, June 6th on CBS.

Assassins
first preview performance was greeted by a very enthusiastic
audience. The show will open officially April 22, 2004.
Amazing Journey spoke with Michael about the controversial musical.
"The remarkable thing about working on Sondheim is
that each show poses new challenges and different difficulties.
For example, in Assassins, I find myself having to start the show
by performing a song which would be the big 11 o'clock number in
any other show. But there is an intelligence, a depth and a darkness
laced with great wit that is common to a lot of his shows, I think.

March 26th 2004: Michael returns to Broadway in Sondheim's Assassins
This March, Michael will be returning to Broadway in the long-awaited
staging of Stephen Sondheim's musical Assassins.
"The show that gives new meaning to the phrase "killer
musical" returns in a dazzling new production. This strikingly
provocative work looks at the lives, loves and lunacy of nine
American assassins, including John Wilkes Booth, John Hinckley,
Lee Harvey Oswald and Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme."
Michael will portray John Wilkes Booth.
The notorious musical is set to begin previews March 26, 2004
at the Roundabout
Theatre''s new home at Studio 54. Official opening is set
for April 22, 2004. This production will mark the musical's Broadway
premiere.
February
3rd 2004: Michael takes "Wintertime"
to New York
Michael will
be returning to his role as the sexy Frenchman, Francois in the
Charles Mee comedy Wintertime. First staged at the McCarter
Theater in Princeton, NJ late last year, the "energetic comedy
about the miracle of love" (Variety) won raves from critics
and audiences.
A winter
weekend in the country snowballs into a hilarious blizzard of
passion and jealousy when Jonathan and Ariel arrive at his familys
vacation home to find his parents and their respective
lovers already ensconced.
Michael will be leaving the production on March 7th to begin rehearsals
of Assassins.

"Dog Eared " the title track off of Michael's upcoming
album was featured prominently on the second episode (shown as
part two of the pilot) of MTV's new season of the Real
World San Diego. The beginning of the song can be heard
on MTV's
site - click the first clip. Another upbeat song, "Crosshill"
had been played previously on episode 8 of Real
World/Road Rules Challenge the Gauntlet.

Michael is interviewed in Windy City Times:
Michael discusses his upcoming debut album Dog Eared
as well as his role as Carl Magnus in Night Music and the fact
that 2004 is turning out to be a "sondheim year".
MC: I could
not be more thrilled. If I was going to be sort of known as the
actor who does something … I guess I used to be known as
the actor who does rock musicals, which was thrilling and exciting.
But I’ve always been a huge fan of Sondheim, so to have
this opportunity to do so many roles in such a short period of
time is really exciting.. .”
The Chicago Sun Times:
"Night Music," Sondheim's enchanted and enchanting 1973
musical in waltz time -- which opened Monday might in a spellbinding
rendering --(is) in many ways is the composer-lyricist's most Shakespearean
work....Part delicious throwback to operetta, and part period comedy
of manners as timely as "Sex and the City," Griffin's
production unspools with the wonderfully dizzying quality of a carousel
revolving at high speed."
The Chicago Tribune:
"Griffin also has unusually rich depth in his cast. The grand,
booming voice of Michael Cerveris (the original Tommy in "The
Who's Tommy" on Broadway) shows up in the second-tier role
of the Count, usually a one-dimensional throwaway. ... This is
Griffin's most mature and successful Chicago show to date —
a fine marriage of traditional craft and progressive innovation,
simplicity and expansiveness. It's populated by the internationally
accomplished, and by Chicagoans at the very top of their game.
January 13th: Michael will perform in special acoustic show in Chicago
Mark your calendars! Michael will be performing a special solo acoustic
show in Chicago on Tuesday, January 13th 2004. Be sure to come down

ASSASSINS
Michael has given us the following exclusive statement:
"I have in fact had the great good fortune to be offered a
role in Assassins and couldn't be happier or more
excited about it. There are potential conflicts to be worked out
and I very much want to fulfill as much of my commitment to Wintertime
as absolutely possible--it's a really wonderful play, a terrific
role and still very much of a priority for me as well. Both theaters
are speaking with my agents who tell me everyone is keen to make
it all work out if at all possible. I'm looking forward (with fingers
crossed) to being very busy and very, very happy in the New Year.
Please excuse Amazing Journey for not bringing you this news first,
but it was my request that they hold off. AJ is still the best,
most accurate and up to date place for news of my whereabouts and
goings on."
In other news, Michael will be leaving soon for Chicago to star
in Chicago Shakespeare Company's A Little Night Music
as Carl-Magnus under the direction of Gary Griffin. He is joined
by a wonderful cast of actors from Chicago, New York and London
including Paul Keating as Henrik. Paul was Tommy in the London production
of The Who's Tommy. No plans as yet to interpolate Pinball Wizard
in "Now/Soon/Later", though....
Information and tickets may be found at www.chicagoshakes.com
The run is December 23rd until February 15th, but Michael will be
leaving January 18th to resume rehearsals for Wintertime

Wintertime
Opens
The Star-Ledger
Reports:
"Charles L. Mee's "Wintertime," at the McCarter's
Matthews Theatre in Princeton, is a thinking man's travesty that
shows how people love these days. It's a brilliant black comedy
that takes place on a snow-white set....."Wintertime"
is a farce for all seasons. "
The Trenton Times Interview:
"He's an unrepentant Frenchman, a Lothario," Cerveris
says of Francois. "He feels it's his duty and responsibility
to help everyone experience love as fully as possible, so he's full
of advice for everybody and bubbling with explanations for his own
behavior, which, by most standards, would be kind of reprehensible"
While
Cerveris enjoys analyzing his character, he doesn't want to reveal
all of the play's mysteries.
For instance,
just how and why does most of the cast, decked out in flowered
underwear, sing "O Mio Babbino Caro" from Puccini's
wildly romantic comic opera "Gianni Schicchi"?

Things have
changed regarding the planned November release of dog eared
on a previous label. The new plan is for a street date of
24 February, 2004 (just in time for Valentine's Day....) on Low
Heat Records (www.LowHeat.com),
distributed by the good, good people at Redeye Distribution
(www.redeyeusa.com).
They should have it out through their extensive network of major
and independent retailers, Internet sales outlets and even cutting
edge outlets like iTunes. The album is already making an impression,
though, even before it's released. It's already been licensed for
possible use in soundtracks for MTV's Real World, Road
Rules and Extreme Sports shows. And another popular television
show has expressed interest as well--details to follow.
Be sure to check out The CMJ
Monthly Magazine (College Music Journal) website in November
: Can't Feel My Soul will be available as a free MP3 download.
.
The February issue will include Disconnect - track 2 on the
new album on it's free CD with every copy. Pick yours up as soon
